- Nick Reiner is officially being charged with the murders of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner.

- Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Nick Reiner will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders.

- Nick Reiner was arrested Sunday night and did not appear in court as expected Tuesday morning due to lack of medical clearance.

Nick Reiner will be formally charged with the murders of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell announced the news at a press conference Tuesday afternoon. Nick Reiner will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders. Hochman added that the accused "faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife."

Hochman noted that the maximum sentence for the charges is life in prison without possibility of parole or the death penalty. "These are the most serious charges that the DA's office can bring against anyone," he said.**

Authorities declined to comment on most specifics of Nick Reiner's arrest and on further details of the case, though they did note that the accused did not resist arrest when he was approached by officers in the Exposition Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The DA also noted the decedents' accomplishments during the conference. "Rob Reiner was a brilliant anchor and director — an iconic force in our entertainment industry for decades," he said. "His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was an equally iconic photographer and producer. Their loss is beyond tragic, and we will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice."

Hochman reiterated that "Charges are not evidence. Evidence is something we will be presenting in a court of law to meet the standard of proof we meet in every criminal case, which is beyond a reasonable doubt to 12 jurors."
