Meryl Streep recently appeared with her Devil Wears Prada 2 costars in conversation with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM’s Front Row

The actress did not know Anna Wintour, believed to be the inspiration for her character Miranda Priestly, back in 2006 when the original film was made

After getting to know the fashion editor in the 20 years since, Streep recalled telling Wintour that the sequel is “going to be good”

Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour have become closer in the 20 years since The Devil Wears Prada.

“I didn't know her at all because of my dissociation from fashion for the first movie,” Streep, 76, recalled on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen-hosted Front Row. Joining the Oscar winner were her The Devil Wears Prada 2 costars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci ahead of the sequel’s May 1 release.

Back in 2006, Streep “didn’t want to” get to know Wintour, 76, when creating the chic Miranda Priestly, adapted for the screen from Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel The Devil Wears Prada. It is widely believed the character is based on Wintour; like the protagonist, Weisberger had once worked as a personal assistant to the former Vogue editor.

“I just wanted to create my own Miranda,” Streep told Cohen, 57. “I wanted to have it be my own thing, and, ‘Who I would be if I were in charge?’”

But “after I got to know her over the last 20 years,” the Mamma Mia! star continued, Wintour “did call me up and say, ‘What's this going to be like?’” in reference to the long-awaited sequel.

Streep recalled telling Wintour, “‘I think it's going to be good. You're not going to be worried.’ And I still feel that way.”

In their joint cover of Vogue's May 2026 issue, Streep and Wintour talked to Greta Gerwig about the differences between The Devil Wears Prada and its follow-up. Wintour said she indeed got in touch with the actress upon hearing about the sequel, saying, “I knew she would tell me if it was going to be all right.”

After Streep read the script and called her back to reassure her, Wintour recalled, she felt at ease. “She told me very little about what happens in the film, but I trusted her implicitly."

Amid the press tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2, a fun fact emerged about Streep and Wintour: the women are distantly related, per Ancestry.com.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (in theaters May 1), again from director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, stars Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, Tucci, Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen and Conrad Ricamora.
