How Climax Blues Band's 'Couldn't Get It Right' Became a Road Trip Classic

What makes a song a classic road trip anthem? Well, it should have feel-good vibes, a steady groove, and, ideally, lyrics about driving. One '70s hit that definitely checks all of those boxes is the Climax Blues Band's "Couldn't Get It Right," which was the group's biggest hit...even though it was a last-minute addition to their highest-charting record.

In fact, the band thought they were all done recording their eighth studio album, Gold Plated (1976) when their manager, Miles Copeland, demanded they add one more "radio-friendly" track, according to The Independent. Copeland apparently suggested an Elvis Presley cover, but the band members decided to write a song about life on the road instead:

"Time was drifting, this rock had got to roll / So I hit the road and made my getaway / Restless feeling, really got a hold / I started searching for a better way / And I kept on looking for a sign in the middle of the night / But I couldn't see the light, no, I couldn't see the light / I kept on looking for a way to take me through the night / Couldn't get it right, I couldn't get it right"

As guitarist/vocalist Peter Haycock explained years later, the song's "original composition" was his own.

“The band then worked on the arrangement for an afternoon at [drummer] John Cuffley’s place in Milwich, Staffs," Haycock recalled, per Classic Rock. "Later, Colin honed and added to my lyrics to suit his own deep vocal style during the recording period, including evenings in the hotel in London after the sessions, when we would sit together and work on the lyrics."

"A good example would be the transition from my original ‘We all went looking for a sign in the middle of the night’ to ‘I kept on looking,'" he continued. "My original chorus lyric idea was simply about driving around some city in the USA trying to find the Holiday Inn, which, despite its brightly illuminated sign, became increasingly hard to reach due to one-way systems, et cetera."

'Couldn't Get It Right' was Climax Blues Band's biggest hit ever

The British band's travel troubles ended up putting the gold in Gold Plated, so to speak. "Couldn't Get It Right" was a huge hit in the U.K., where it went to #10, but it was even more successful in the U.S., where it shot to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.

"With 'Couldn’t Get It Right,' the Climax Blues Band transcended the clichés of the road-song genre and incorporated several of their trademarks, including the vocal harmonies of Haycock and Holt behind Cooper’s lead, and Haycock’s guitar being played in unison with Cooper’s saxophone, to create a concise gem of a single equal to the best work of the Doobie Brothers or Ace," wrote Pierre Perrone of The Independent in a 2013 obituary for Haycock.

One thing's for sure: "Couldn't Get It Right" certainly deserves a place on your summer road trip playlist.
