Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday is in theaters December 2026

Chris Evans is officially returning for Avengers: Doomsday, and a few things have changed since his last appearance in a Marvel movie.

The first teaser trailer for the upcoming film played before screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash, showing Evans' Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, cradling a newborn baby.

The text, “Steve Rogers will return for Avengers: Doomsday," appears onscreen in the teaser before a countdown begins ahead of the movie's December 2026 release date.

This is reportedly one of multiple teasers set to be released in the coming weeks, with other clips focusing on different characters, according to Variety.

Evans famously portrayed Steve Rogers in several Marvel movies, beginning with 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and ending with 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

The latter saw Steve as an older man pass down his Captain America shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), after going back in time to reunite with his beloved Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

Earlier this year, Evans claimed he would not be starring in Avengers: Doomsday as he discussed his movie Materialists. The actor told ScreenRant in an interview published in June, "I mean, it's sad to be away. It's sad to not be back with the band, but I'm sure they're doing something incredible, and I'm sure it's going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you weren't invited to the party."

Details about Avengers: Doomsday were announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, including the title and the new villain. In a standout moment during the Marvel presentation, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr., who famously played Iron Man, would return to the MCU as Doctor Doom.

While the Infinity Saga revolved around Thanos (Josh Brolin) as the main villain, the Multiverse Saga will debut Doctor Doom as the big bad in the upcoming film. Downey will be taking on the role after his character Iron Man sacrificed himself to save the world in Avengers: Endgame.

“New mask, same task," Downey said after emerging onto the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con panel's stage while taking off Doctor Doom’s notable silver mask. "What did I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters."

In addition to Downey as the villain, it was confirmed during last year's Comic-Con that both the Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts would appear in Avengers 5 and 6.

For Fantastic Four, that includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing.

From the Thunderbolts, the following actors are expected to appear: Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Lewis Pullman as Bob.

In March, a livestream hosted by Marvel announced more additions to the cast. Those confirmed to return include Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Simu Liu.

During the same live stream, Marvel revealed that several of the X-Men will also appear in Doomsday, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer.

Avengers: Doomsday is in theaters Dec. 18, 2026.
