Superman: Man of Tomorrow is soaring into theaters in 2027!
The Superman sequel, which was written and directed by James Gunn, will feature several returning cast members from the 2025 film — including David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
However, unlike the first movie, the upcoming film will revolve around arch enemies Kent and Luthor working together to defeat an even more dangerous villain, Brainiac, who will be played by newcomer Lars Eidinger. In April 2026, Adria Arjona also joined the cast reportedly as Maxima, per Variety.
While the exact synopsis and a trailer have yet to be released, Gunn confirmed that Man of Tomorrow will premiere on July 9, 2027.

Who is directing Superman: Man of Tomorrow?

James Gunn, who directed the 2025 Superman movie, confirmed that he is writing and directing Superman: Man of Tomorrow, as well.
In addition to the Superman films, Gunn is known for directing hit films including the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and The Suicide Squad. Gunn is a force in the DCU; he also just produced Supergirl, which hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
As filming for Superman: Man of Tomorrow has been underway, Gunn has posted several throwback behind-the-scenes photos of the cast reading lines and suiting up.
Which cast members are returning for Superman: Man of Tomorrow?

Superman: Man of Tomorrow will feature several stars from the first film. Corenswet and Hoult will reprise their roles as Superman and Luthor, respectively, while Brosnahan will also return as Lane.
The other confirmed cast members include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, per Variety.

As of April 2026, three new characters and cast members have been added to Superman: Man of Tomorrow. In December 2025, Gunn announced that German actor Eidinger was chosen to play the villain Brainiac, who is a "hyper intelligent alien android with a tyrannical thirst for absolute knowledge of the universe," per Variety.

"In our worldwide search for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, Lars Eidinger rose to the top. Welcome to the DCU, Lars," Gunn captioned a picture of Eidinger on Instagram.
Eidinger has previously starred in the miniseries All the Light We Cannot See and the 2025 movie Jay Kelly.
In March 2026, Deadline reported that Aaron Pierre had been cast as John Stewart/Green Lantern. While it marks the first time he'll appear in a DCU movie, he was also cast as the superhero in the upcoming DC Studios television series Lanterns.
Pierre rose to fame for his role in Krypton and later appeared in The Underground Railroad, Genius and Mufasa: The Lion King.
Rounding out the new cast of characters is Arjona as Maxima, a warrior alien queen obsessed with Superman, as Variety reported in April 2026.
Arjona — who is in a relationship with fellow DCU actor Jason Momoa — has previously starred in Andor, Morbius, Blink Twice, Father of the Bride and Hit Man, among others.

While an official synopsis for Superman: Man of Tomorrow has not been released, several outlets have reported that unlikely teammates Superman and Luthor will be working together to take on Brainiac, one of the deadliest supervillains in the DCU, in the new movie.
